Greetings, fellow book enthusiasts!

I am Claire E. Jones, an author of queer fantasy romance and a mentor dedicated to guiding aspiring writers on their literary journeys.

Today, I am excited to delve into a recurring conversation that often shapes the paths of writers seeking publication avenues.

The conversations I find most challenging are with authors who have ventured into self-publishing on platforms like Amazon, only to face the harsh reality of limited sales or aspirations for broader distribution in retail giants like Target and Walmart.

It’s a delicate moment when I have to gently break it to them that exclusive publishing through Amazon may restrict their opportunities for wider distribution.

Before we dive deeper, let me share a bit of my background.

My writing journey began at a tender age, nurtured by my mother’s artistic influence as an art teacher. From truly awful fanfiction in elementary school to award-winning poetry in high school, my literary evolution unfolded through academic research papers in college and transitioned into all kinds of business writing when I entered entrepreneurship in 2014.

In 2022, I embarked on my first fiction endeavor—a queer fantasy romance series inspired by a Dungeons and Dragons concept. Drawing from eight years of entrepreneurial experience and founding multiple businesses, I ventured into the world of publishing by establishing a company that has since released three novels, four planners, 12 journals, and a workbook.

Today, armed with a wealth of knowledge in the publishing domain, I aim to shed light on essential aspects for fellow writers navigating the intricacies of the industry.

Many authors initially aspire to follow the traditional publishing path, dedicating years to securing agents and publishers. Yet, the cornerstone of traditional publishing often hinges on the author’s existing audience base and its potential for monetization, requiring substantial follower counts to capture the attention of prominent houses.

In instances where traditional publishing proves elusive, writers may pivot towards hybrid, vanity, or self-publishing routes, assuming greater control over the publishing process.

However, regardless of the publishing avenue chosen, authors bear the onus of building a personal brand and spearheading marketing efforts to drive book sales and engagement—a journey fraught with challenges and the need for specialized knowledge.

Amidst the allure of amassing followers, it’s vital to discern the quality over quantity of followers and leverage them strategically. Authentic engagement and intentional growth often yield more sustainable outcomes than rapid, superficial fame.

Crafting a clear brand identity that resonates with personal values, interests, and aspirations forms the bedrock of a successful author’s journey. Aligning every opportunity and engagement with this brand ethos ensures authenticity and resonance with the audience.

By prioritizing this, authors can navigate the publishing maze with purpose and resilience, steering clear of imposter syndrome and self-doubt that often hinder creative expression.

Understanding the nuances of various publishing options and aligning them with personal goals and brand messaging is pivotal in making informed decisions that lead to success as an author..

May your literary ventures be filled with creativity, purpose, and fulfillment.
